Congratulations to John 805 for representing IS 187 and the Academy of Business & Law at The SIFMA Foundation's Tribute Dinner! John motivated the crowd of financial luminaries with his inspiring words about the importance of financial literacy and personal finance education, citing his experience with playing the Stock Market Game under the guidance of his Business teacher Mrs. Yuliya Mikhels. We are so proud of John!
Five I.S. 187 students were invited to a four-part middle school student-centered series connecting four schools in multiple boroughs. This experience has given students a chance to deepen their understanding of themselves and each other through restorative practices, SEL, and music—all leading up to a presentation at the Citywide Youth Summit on May 28.
We are thrilled to share that our math team has secured 1st place in the Brooklyn Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition on February 4th! MATHCOUNTS is a prestigious annual contest that challenges middle school students to apply their mathematical knowledge and problem-solving skills in a competitive setting. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, our students have advanced to the state competition, which will take place in Saratoga Springs this March.
A huge congratulations to our team:
Additionally, Ethan Chen (703) will be competing as an individual qualifier at the state level!
This incredible achievement is a testament to their perseverance, teamwork, and passion for mathematics. We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to Ms. Gambino and Ms. Tung for their dedication and commitment in coaching and supporting our students throughout this journey. Their guidance has been instrumental in the team's success! We couldn’t be prouder of our students and look forward to cheering them on at the next stage of the competition!
Congratulations once again to our Math Team on this outstanding accomplishment!
ABL 7th and 8th Grade students had a unique opportunity to tour the offices of Popular Bank in collaboration with Junior Achievement! Students engaged in interactive activities to develop essential professional skills, including how to write a professional resume. Thank you to our wonderful Business teacher Mrs. Mikhels for organizing this experience!
Our 8th Grade Chorus Classes recently embarked on a fascinating journey into the world of music recording and engineering. This experience was not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable for all the students involved. Each student had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on session, where they explored the various aspects of the music recording process.
Throughout the sessions, students learned about the different techniques used in music production, including sound mixing, editing, and mastering. They engaged with professionals in the field, gaining insights into the tools and technology that make music recording possible. This exposure allowed them to appreciate the artistry behind their favorite songs and understand the effort that goes into producing high-quality music.
The chorus members were enthusiastic and eager to learn, asking questions and experimenting with different recording methods. The experience fostered teamwork and creativity, as students collaborated to create their own recordings. By the end of the sessions, they not only developed new skills but also a deeper appreciation for the music they love.
What a great day 803, 805, and 811!
ABL students had an exciting opportunity to learn about the future of AI during their job shadow visit to Capgemini! Class 806 learned about technology-based careers via hands-on activities like programming their own robots.
